The Alleyman’s Tarot

The Alleyman’s Tarot is an award-winning tarot deck comprised of art from over 80 artists. I joined the project in late 2020, contributing a card design from my hand-drawn Playing Card Tarot (still in progress).

The Alleyman’s Tarot went live on Kickstarter in April 2021 and quickly surpassed its funding goal, eventually becoming the most funded tarot project on the platform with 19,275 backers, 40,000 copies printed, and nearly $1.5 million pledged in support of the project.

At this stage I was offered the opportunity to take on a second role with the Kickstarter, creating up to 50 unique, hand made patchwork deck bags available for pre-order through the Kickstarter. Each bag took 10-12 hours to make and was priced at $250.

Over the course of the next few weeks 40 bags were ordered, and I spent the summer of 2021 producing them. Every bag included a choice of 5 appliques on the front, a button closure, and a pocket. They were decorated with a collage of found textile materials, sigils, ink spatters, embroidery, and beadwork.

In light of the high price of the bags, I also created a tutorial for fans of the deck who wanted to create their own deck bag. This was made available on a sliding price scale on Etsy.

I finished the bags in September 2021, after four months of work, and have since then produced additional bags and other items in this style on a commission basis.
